Getting the light just right

Light- it’s important,  but it has to be just the right amount of light, of just the right kind, in just the right place at just the right time. To achieve this, we put windows in our walls, and then put curtains and blinds on our windows. When planning your interior lighting, it makes sense to put a lot of thought into what sort of light you need where.

Your kitchen should be brightly lit — you need overall ambient light throughout the room, and you also need what lighting professionals call “task lighting” on the counters and over the stove to help you see exactly what you’re doing when you’re cooking. A bathroom is another room that needs bright light, but here it’s a little more complicated. You’ll want light on both sides of your mirror so you can see your face properly. Diffuse lighting that isn’t directly overhead when you’re standing in front of the mirror will do the most for your appearance and self-confidence while you’re getting ready to face the world. It should also be noted that some people don’t care for bathroom lighting that is too harsh a shade of white.

In your living room, you can afford more a ornamental lighting fixture, such as a chandelier. There should still be task lighting for reading, and a room which is evenly lit is friendlier and more comfortable than a room where shadows pool in the corners. In the bedroom, you’ll want task lighting to read by until you’re ready to go to sleep. And the hall, garage and so on all have their own lighting needs.
